From Mexico to Chile on a BMW R50/2
Here we go
23/07/14
The motorcycle is on the trailer, ready to join the Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport where it will be put in a create and will fly to Mexico City.
It is a BMW R50/2 from 1967. Forty seven years at the odometer and 500 small cc.
I put on it reinforced tire tubes, a 12V dynamo instead of his 6V to have a better lighting and to plug my old GPS Garmin.
The Metzeler tires have already 3000 km, I estimate that they will last 10,000 more.
I charged the Garmin with «streetmap» maps (free) of the countries which I will cross. The ignition coil was also changed as its condensor. It is an element sensitive to heat on this kind of motorcycle.
It is also equipped with an anonymous switch which shorts-circuit the coil, a kind of discrete theft protection device: no way to start the motorcycle then. It is rigged out of two leather panniers, 30 liters each one and coated of grease to make them waterproof. These panniers are full of tools, hammock, sleeping bag 0°C, spare parts in the event of puncture, with 4m of steel wire rope to attach the motorcycle to a fixed point and of a pair of winter’s gloves replacement.
I attend the setting of the create. A very professional work. The bike will leave on July 28th and will be available to the freight airport at Mexico City on July 29th.
My plane ticket makes me arrive in Mexico City the 28 at the evening.
My target : join Valparaiso from Mexico City. 11 000 km Solo, without any assistance or sponsor.
It will be difficult to sleep these week.
